When is blueberry picking season?
Blueberries follow strawberries: the first farms open in Florida in April, and the last fields in Michigan, Maine and the Pacific Northwest close in August. We list 1,834 farms for blueberries in 40 states. The states with the most: New York (136), Florida (121), Oregon (99), North Carolina (92), Washington (91).
Typical season by region
- Florida and Hawaii: April to June
- Deep South and Southwest (TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, AZ): May to July
- California and Nevada: May to July
- Upper South (NC, TN, VA, AR, OK, KY, NM): June to July
- Mid-Atlantic and Midwest (PA, NJ, MD, OH, IN, IL, MO and neighbors): June to August
- Northeast and Upper Midwest (NY, New England, MI, WI, MN and neighbors): July to August
- Pacific Northwest (OR, WA, ID): July to August
- Mountain West (CO, UT, MT, WY): July to August
These are rough windows. A warm spring can move the start up by a week or two, a late frost or a cool summer can push it back. Season notes on our farm pages are what the farm posted, sometimes for an earlier year.

Tips for picking blueberries
- Ripe blueberries are fully blue all the way around, including the spot where the stem was. Berries with a red or green tint will not ripen further after picking.
- Hold a cupped hand under a cluster and roll the berries gently with your thumb. Ripe ones drop off, unripe ones stay on.
- Do not wash the berries until just before you eat them. Stored dry in the fridge they keep for about a week.
